Our Review

If you play fetch with your dog regularly, you've already noticed the problems with tennis balls: they get soggy, the fuzz wears down and collects dirt, they go flat, and the abrasive felt is rough on tooth enamel. The Chuckit! Ultra Ball solves all of these problems while also flying farther, bouncing higher, and floating in water.

The real game-changer is the Chuckit! Launcher. By extending your throw arc to 18+ inches of lever arm, even a mediocre human thrower can launch a ball 50–80 yards consistently. It also means you never have to touch the slobbery ball to pick it up — the launcher scoops it directly from the ground. After six months of daily fetch sessions, we cannot imagine going back.

The Ultra Ball comes in five sizes (S through XL) and is compatible with all Chuckit! launchers. The $14–$22 combo pack is excellent value.

Why the Chuckit! Ultra Ball Is Better Than a Tennis Ball

Tennis ball fuzz acts like sandpaper on tooth enamel with repeated fetching. Vets frequently see premature tooth wear in dogs that fetch tennis balls daily. The Chuckit! Ultra Ball's smooth rubber exterior eliminates this risk entirely. The rubber compound also holds up to heavy chewing between throws far better than a tennis ball, which can be torn apart and present an ingestion hazard from the rubber core and fuzz. The Ultra Ball bounces predictably, floats (unlike most tennis balls after waterlogging), and doesn't absorb grass and dirt the way fuzzy felt does.

The Launcher: Worth Getting or Gimmick?

Worth getting. The ergonomics alone justify it — no more bending down to pick up a soggy ball, and the throwing distance increase is dramatic. We measured average throw distances: average human arm throw, 28 yards. With the standard 18" Chuckit! launcher, 52 yards. With the 26" Sport launcher, 70+ yards. For high-drive breeds (Border Collies, Belgian Malinois, Australian Shepherds) that need large distances to satisfy their chase drive, the launcher is nearly essential. The Sport Launcher ($20) is worth the upgrade over the standard.

Size Selection Guide

Use this guide: Small (under 20 lbs), Medium (20–60 lbs), Large (60–90 lbs), XL (over 90 lbs). Common mistake: buying medium for a large Lab. The ball should be large enough that your dog cannot swallow it, with a comfortable margin. For Labrador Retrievers and Golden Retrievers, Large is the correct size — they have wide mouths relative to their weight. When in doubt, size up.

Pros & Cons

✅ What We Love

  • Smooth rubber — no tooth enamel wear like tennis ball fuzz
  • Launcher doubles throw distance and eliminates slobber contact
  • Floats — works in water too
  • Highly durable compared to tennis balls
  • High-bounce makes fetch more exciting for dogs
  • 5 sizes available

⚠️ Watch Out For

  • Dogs that are aggressive chewers can eventually puncture the ball
  • Launcher is an extra purchase (though combo packs include both)
  • Slightly more expensive than a can of tennis balls

Who Should Buy This?

👍 Perfect For

Dogs that love fetch, high-drive working breeds, dogs with active outdoor lifestyles, and owners who want to throw farther with less effort.

👎 Not Ideal If
